Fort Garland Museum is established in 1858 in Southern Colorado and named after the Brevet Brigadier General John Garland, command of the Department of New Mexico. It was built to protect settlers from Indian resistance.

The Fort Garland served the U.S from 1858-1883 and this fort was restored between 1945-1950 by the Colorado Historical Society. It is one of the best preserved and the oldest fort of 19th century in Colorado.

The museum exhibits an excellent section of books and publications on varied topics like history, geology, people, land and culture of the San Luis Valley, Colorado and the West.

The fort Garland Museum accommodated artifacts which were used in the day to day life of early soldiers who were on the fort for their duties.

The museum also exhibits many exhibitions throughout the year with permanent exhibitions named ‘Buffalo Soldiers West’ which explains the opportunities which black soldiers found in the military. The museum also enjoys the “Four Careers of Kit Carson” which explains the legendary characters who were commandant of Fort Garland.
