Garland Historical Facts & InformationGarland city is situated in Dallas-Fort which is about 15 miles northeast of Dallas. It is named after the U.S Attorney General Augustus H. Garland. The city has been incorporated in 1891 during the mid-20 the century, it started transforming from an agricultural town to an industrial town.The World War II helped Garland to emerge as a strong economy along with the increase in population. After the World War II, the city started development activities around the industries which results in the development of the surrounding area. The city has covered around the area of 57.1 square miles of the land. According to the 2000 census the population of the city is around 215,768 people which is a considerable increase in the population from 38,501 in 1960. The 29.8% of the population lies under the age of 18 yrs, 9.6% lies in between the age 18 to 24 yrs, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64 and 7.1% are older than 65 yrs.
